Gnome Stuck

I've seen this question asked before, but not with a
solution that works for me.

I have RH6 and installed the base Gnome 1.0 that came with.
It ran like a trooper for more than a week.  The all of the
sudden it takes a long time to log in, and the logout button
on the panel doesn't work anymore.  (What's really weird is
that once in a very great while it will all work fine for a
single boot, then back to slug-ville.)

My Xclients file starts gnome by 'exec gnome-session' only
(no exec panel, nothing put into the background etc.).
I'm using Elightenment wm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
