Screen Resolution

How do you change the monitor resolution you're running at in
Gnome/Enlightenment and is there a way to determine what resolution
you're currently running at?

Also, I set the virtual desktop to 1X1, but the desktop area is still
larger than the monitor screen. Is this normal?
