session manager problems

Er. Everytime I log out and log back in the session manager reruns
all the applications I had open, even though I *closed* them before
logging out. and when the panel is run, it is not run when i log in
subsequent time. ~/.gnome/session is not being updated correctly.

If i can offer any more info I will. my gnome-core is 1.0.5
