gnome startup probs

Hello you,

Iīve got problems with the startup of gnome. I even read the faq, but the
following lines in ~/.xinitrc do not work right for me:

gmc &
(esd; sleep 1) &
panel --enable-sound &
exec gnome-wm

I donīt want to use session-management, because it doesnīt work on my
machine (some gnome-name-server probs). The problem now: gmc and E start
up fine, but the panel starts (I can see it building up) and then exits.
