[Offtopic] X mouse frequency

I've been using win95 and linux/X11 for a long time. I've just started
using NT and the Macintosh at work. The first thing I noticed about the
latter two is that the mouse cursor is incredibly smooth compared to the
former.

Is there a configuration setting or a patch that brings my X server to
NT's level in this respect or is that hard to do due to the loose
coupling between X and the OS?
