Panel crashes on Accelerated-X version 5

I've got a new box (PIII 500MHz, 256 Megs, Matrox G200), that I'm
trying out gnome on.  I'm running RedHat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36, and the
gnome rpms from rhad labs.

Gnome works just fine using the XFree server, but I'm having problems
getting it going under Accelerated-X 5.  I'd like to be able to use
XFree, but I need to be able to do overlays, so....

I tried using gnome-session but that didn't get far at all, so I'm just
trying to get the panel working first, then go from there.

When I try to start up the panel from the command line, I get the
following:

[rod@lepton rod]$

aborting...

[3]+  Aborted                 (core dumped) panel


Any ideas?
