RH5.1/gnome-session problem

Try launching gnome-session. When you get no window manager, launch an xterm from the panel. Type 'englightenment &' or whatever to get a WM fired up. Once it's completely up, log out from the panel.

Then try startx again. If the session manager is working properly it should restart your WM for you since it was running when you logged out.

This .xinitrc works

If I change it to 
#!/bin/sh
# WindowMaker Default .xinitrc
#enlightenment
#panel &
#exec /usr/local/bin/wmaker
gnome-session
##

gnome-session runs but doesn't start a window manager

I've tried changing /usr/local/share/default.session and default.wm to
wmaker and enlightenment and neither start.  

If I add gmc to my startup apps via the control center gmc will start but
I still don't have a window manager.

enlightenment was built with defualt options
window maker was built with --with-gnome

Anyone have an idea what to try.  I'd really like to get session
management working.  Thanks.
