hmm... I have found that there are reliable rpms at
ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/2/gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-1.0/redhat

I would suggest you grab them and see if you still have the problem.

ftp.geo.net might have some bad rpms...
