Question with gdm

Would anyone know why I'm getting the following error message when
installing gnome v1.0?

user gdm does not exist using root
group gdm does not exist using root


I used:

rpm -Uvh *.rpm

...the error popped up during the install of gdm-1_0_0-2_i386.rpm

Should I create the user and group manually?  Is there an .rpm that
I removed or haven't installed that would add the gdm user and group?
