Question on Installing packages

I have installed gnome 1.0.1 on a RH5.2 from the binaries RPM.
Now i would upgrade the gmc and gnome-libs to newer version, but I have the .tgz format...
Do you suggest some operations to do before compiling and installing, or i can safely do it? And RPM archive will be 'stunned' from that?
