That effect is from E and it's a feature not a bug. middle clicking on
the desktop should bring up E's menu and you can enable/disbale it from
there.

Sounds like you're running gnome-session but it hasn't found a
gnome-compliant wm to play with. Try this , edit you .xinitrc to look
like this.

panel &
exec enlightenment

run it for a bit and exit. then edit that file again. so it has this one
line.

gnome-session
 
and it should work.
