Gnome 1.0 undocumented "features"

I just took off my prevous version of gnome and installed gnome 1.0 Redhat
RPMs.  There are three major "features":
1. No buttons on the bar at the bottom this time.  When I try to to add an
applet.  Nothing happens.
2. When I try to add a new theme, the open window comes up now, but when I
select a tarball theme and click open, it locks the configurator.  Or just
exits and does nothing.
3. Mysterious core dumps in my home directory.

Any suggestions?
