I just installed GNOME 1.0, after previously having used mainly
AfterStep and fvwm95. I used the Red Hat 5.2 rpms which installed
with few problems (except that I needed to force some upgrades, and
gnome-audio-extra-1.0.0-1.noarch.rpm wouldn't install for some
reason).
Running gnome-session for the first time, Enlightenment said that it
would modify the files to change my default window manager, but it
didn't work. I had to do that manually. On my system the file that
Enlightenment needed to modify (but didn't) was
/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients. In any case, the modifications that it made
to the startup files in my home directory were wrong: it added
Enlightenment, but not gnome-session. For inexperienced users this
could be confusing.
A couple of problems which I *haven't* been able to solve: my desktop
icons don't appear. I can tell they are there, in the .gnome-desktop
directory, but they don't appear and I can't right-click on the
workspace. Could this be a memory problem? (I have only 16Mb on this
machine, and I can't run WordPerfect and GNOME at once, whereas I
could with AfterStep.)
Also, the GNOME Users Guide doesn't appear to be included in the Red
Hat rpms, which is confusing as it is linked to from the main page of
the Help browser (it returns an error when you click on it). Or am I
doing something wrong?
The final problem I've found so far is that in the applet to change
your window manager, no choices are offered. Do windows managers have
to be registered with GNOME in some way?
None of these are huge problems, but I thought I had better report
them (and maybe even get some advice) in case the developers are after
some feedback from new users.
