help: gnome won't run

I've installed GNOME1.0 from rpms, as described in the page at

http://www.gnome.org/start/getting_rh.shtml#ftp

and it won't run.  I have already put 'exec gnome-session' into my
.Xclients file.  Here's what happens: I get a hashed screen, which is
what I always get when my X server starts (that is the same whether
I'm running fvwm or kde).  Then it pauses there for a while and then
shuts down.  The (error?) message I get on the console
when X terminates is

Does that give anyone an idea what might be wrong?  

I had installed 0.99.7, and the same thing happened.  I just decided
to wait a while for 1.0.  Now 1.0 has the same problem for me.

Are there any log files where I could check to see exactly what is
going wrong?  Are there any tests I could conduct to find out which
program is not working and why?  Any assistance will be greatly 
appreciated.
