screen blanks after enlightment loads

I installed every RPM for Gnome 1.0 on my rh5.2 system. When I hit 
startx the screen goes into x, the progress bar indicating EL15 is 
loading appears, then the cursor changes and immediately the screen 
blanks as if the monitor went on standby. I exit X and the following is 
on the screen:
