esd doesn't play sounds, except for root

Hello folks,
I just installed 1.0 and esd works (finally) for all sounds (gnome
events, enlightenment), but only for the root user.  When I login under
my normal user account, I get no sounds.  I tried esdplay <wave_file>
and get nothing.  Seems like some sort of security issue.  I have an
.esd_auth file in my home directory; is this significant?  Any help
would be appreciated.
