Startup help for a newbie?

Howdy!

I've just installed gnome 0.99.8 on my RH5.2, 2.2.2 box. I very
carefully read the web-page docs and users guide, as well as the FAQ
(v1.0) and, well, here I am about to ask silly questions.

The install went smoothly and everything's there. /usr/bin, where
gnome-session is located, is part of my path. I noted that the docs
online said that, since I have xdm running (I start it in rc.local when
the box comes up), I should put:

  exec gnome-session

...into ~/.xsession. I did this. Nothing happened out of the ordinary
when I logged in; I'm still in fvwm2 (boy, am I ready to play with
Enlightenment!) with no gnome* processes running. I'm certain it's some
failing on my part, but I certainly can't find any segment of
documentation to tell me just what I've done wrong.

Help?

Thanks!
