You can try using "xsm" instead of "gnome-session". It is the standard
X session manager, and it gives you a user interface to do this kind
of things.
You may experience some problems in interaction with Gnome, but this
is IMHO outweighed by the benefits.
Of course I'd rather see the missing functionality in gnome-session,
but unfortunately I do not have time to implement it.
