graphics and formats

Recently I have been screwing around with some of the images that come
with gnome (icons, etc.) The thing is that most everything comes in *.png
format. Great for final use but a pain for editing. It would be great if
Gnome's graphics were easily available in *.xcf (gimp native) format,
complete with layers, etc.

Ideas?
