You may still need to compile gnome-core 1.0.6 from the source .tar.gz
file.  It takes awhile for the rpms to appear.

If you do compile, and you've been using standard redhat rpms in the past,
use 

./configure --prefix=/usr
make 
make install

Of course for all of this to work you need the compilers, development
libraries and all of that.  I was able to compile it, and using the
--prefix=/usr makes it coexist with the rpms beautifully.
