Changeing Font size's to suit a desktop size

Hi

is there a way to reset the fonts on ones desktop if I change it to
larger that 1024x786 the text is to small,  I'd like to go up two
size's on my desktp to give me more room but I can't read the menu's
etc and text in a term window is impossible for me to read.

I'd like to be able to set the desktop and then reset the fonts for the
system
to a bigger size to suit the whole system.
