Some apps dumping core (notably, Panel)

When attempting to run the latest Gnome out of CVS, some applications
are dumping core. The error they spit out before they dump core is:

GLib-ERROR **: could not allocate 1076146625 bytes
aborting...

Note than only some apps do this (gEdit does not, neither does the
Gimp).
