cvs checkout failure

I've finally hit the point where I'd like to begin some development work 
on the basic gnome environment and tried to do a cvs checkout.  I'm 
getting a failure in the ORBit module - has anyone else ever seen this?

Questions? Answers?

[echristo@shifter gnome-src]$ cvs -z3 checkout glib gtk+ imlib ORBit

cvs server: Updating ORBit/libIDL
cvs server: failed to create lock directory in repository
