gmc and icons and command bindings

I am using mc-4.5.6.

Is it possible (yet) to define
- icons to show for e.g. on all files ending in .gif
- a command to view for e.g. all files ending in .gif
For the latter I have created a ~/.mc/gnome.ext containing:

shell/.gif
        Open=xv %f
	View=xv %f

But each time I click with the right mouse and choose Open or View
it asks me for additional options or starts the (internal?) Viewer.

What am I doing wrong?

P.S. I DID RTFM and even a bit RTSL but couldn't find what i am doing wrong
