It's working for me with the AWE kernel modules, as of dev. 
kernel 2.1.121. No AWE support in the 2.0.x series, so I can't 
confirm that it works there for me, but I know others who have 
had success with them.

The sound card doesn't support 16bit, stereo, 44.1kHz audio.
Try running esd in 8 bit mode: "esd -b"
or 8 bit, 22kHz mode: "esd -b -r 22050"
