I installed the newest version of Gimp and I've got it and Gnome 0.99.8 running. Try to find Gimp 1.1.x. I don't know if you're using Redhat/RPM or not but I just now did a search at http://ftpsearch.lycos.com and it looks like there are some 1.1.2 RPMs available as long as you don't mind downloading them from Germany.
I never could have succeeded in getting Gnome running on my machine without the Lycos ftp search. Sometimes the RPMs I need will only be available on a small server in Japan, Russia or Sweden. I wonder though if it's safe to use these files. Am I putting myself at risk doing this? For the most part I haven't run into problems.
