I also got this error. I believe I fixed it by upgrading autoconf. You can get the latest version from ftp://ftp.jimpick.com/pub/mirrors/gnome/extra-src/sources. 

If you're going to be compiling from CVS, its a good idea to have all the latest tools from that location installed.
