gnome menubar w/ toggle or radio items

hi,

i'm looking for a little help with this:

if i have a gnome app, and then created a gnome menubar which contains
toggle buttons and radio buttons, is there a way to get to the actual
widget for the toggle/radio button through the menubar?

e.g., i was looking for the equivalent of gtk_item_factory_get_widget().

basically, the applications needs to be able to update the toggle/radio
buttons without the user clicking/selecting them (although the user is
more than welcomed to click/select them too).
