This certainly needs fixing, but so far there is no obvious way to do
it "right".

This is a known bug. I am reorganizing the menu code to make this
work.

Saving the window size is the job of the session manager. To go for a
file, you can press C-s and type in the name. I know this needs some
feedback while you are performing the search :-)
