I'm assuming you're opening the file and looking for gnroff -man commands
right?

There must be an easier way to determine a filetype.  On the Amiga, it's
fairly easy to know what type of file it is using datatypes.  I don't know
too much about how it works, but I know that it is somewhat based on
dynamic libraries.
