Gnome-core 0.99.7

Compiling gnome-core-0.99.7 from ftp sources:

gcc -g -O2 -Wall -Wno-unused -o .libs/cpumemusage_applet cpumemusage.o
proc.o -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/opt/gnome/lib ../../panel/.libs/libpanel_applet.so
-L/opt/gnome/lib -lORBitCosNaming -lORBit -lIIOP -lORBitutil -lglib -lm

-lgtop_sysdeps -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lXau -L/opt/gnome/lib -lglib
ld: cannot open -lXau: No such file or directory

Obviously it is missing libXau.a, whatever that may be. Could someone
please tell me where Xau might live?

This kind of (not infrequent) problem might be cut down a lot if each
release of Gnome were accompanied by a *complete* parts list, i.e. "in
order to compile gnome 0.99.xxx you must have glib/gtk-1.1.xx, ORBit.yy,
..." and so on. I don't trust the contents of the "latest" directory in
any of the ftp.gnome.org mirror sites (in fact I can't compile with
gtk 1.1.12 there). I can't ever get into ftp.gnome.org. I have troubles
with CVS, and besides that moves too fast.

A complete parts list, (and the order in which each part should be built)
would cut down the "I can't compile" traffic on this list a lot, at least
for the ftp crowd.

TIA.
