Drag & Drop Functionality

Hey,

I've been usin the RPM versions of GNOME since 0.27. Since developement
seems to be going at light speed lately, I decided to install from CVS.
Everything seems to be working all right. It's extremely slow, slower
than either KDE or CDE, but I guess that's to be expected since it's
still in developement etc.

One thing I've noticed is that I can't get the desktop icons to show up
unless I start up GMC, which slows down my poor computer even more! I
realize that the desktop icons are a function of GMC, but is there a way
I can start them up without having to start up the GMC window? Oh, and
where's the trash can?

Another thing I've noticed is that applications on the panel or desktop
aren't truly drag/drop. In CDE, an you could take a file from the file
manager and drag it into an application on the panel, desktop, or
application manager, and the program would try to execute the file you
drug into it. Now THAT was a true drag/drop interface. Unfortunately,
configuring CDE is a pain in the rear. That's why I quit using it. It
was great though, cuz you could just take a .tgz file and drag it into
the Tar icon in the app manager and it'd do everything for ya, no typing
involved! I don't think KDE supports drag/drop either, so incorporating
it into GNOME would put us one step ahead!

By the way, what ever happened to application managers? Just because
Microsoft deemed them uncool, does that mean we have to copy them? The
app manaer in CDE was about the most useful feature it had, due mainly
to the aforementioned drag/drop feature. Plus it freed me from those
horrid menus! I think it'd be cool if GNOME had an app manager that
looked like a folder tab sitting behind the GNOME panel. When you click
on the tab, it'd slide out from behind the panel, and there would be
you're apps. Could that be added on as sort of an applet or something?
It'd be especially cool if the icons would be added to the app manager
automatically, just like they're added to the menu.

Anyway, that's just my two cents.

Jason
