I think the problem is actually with X. However, there is a lot of work
being done by a lot of people for GNOME to be able to handle fonts better.
Take a look at http://omega.uta.edu/~car0969/canvas-test.png and see a
screenshot of a little test program I wrote using Raph Levien's
gnome-canvas-hacktext code.
