I have seen this happen since gnome's pre-1.0 days.
I have seen this happen to Gedit, gnotepad and a few other apps.
I am writting a GTK app (not gnome) and this happen too.
So, IMO it is not related to gnome, but too Gtk, more specificly to Gtk_text widget.

This happens randomically. I would guess it happens about 15% ~25% of the times I use
this kind of app.

Note that _when_ this happen I watch gtop go from idle ~ 5% to 100% at every keystroke.

I have seen a entire row disapearing in Gedit, when you break a existing row in the middle.
If you highlight that line, it appears again. It seens to be related to Gtk_Text, but I have seen
this just with Gedit.

I do use fancy themes some times.
I have switched to ThinIce as suggested to be one of the cleanet themes,
but this happen again.

I have seen this happen with:
Enlightenment DR 15 and DR 16
Window Maker
KDE 1.1

XFree 3.3.2 to 3.3.5

Ok,
This is a PII 300 with 128MB,
the MB is an ASUS P2B
I am running Conectiva Linux 4.0 (it is basicly a RH 6.1 internationalized)
Enlightenment DR 16.02
Gt+ 1.2.6
gnome october.
Xemacs 21.1.4
Netscape 4.7 with Fortify
Mozilla M12
some gnomw apps
some times VMware1.1.2
some times StarOffice 5.1a
and I don't know if this matters, but my home is a NFS export from another machine.

Hope this helps,
