I learned how to trap the X errror messages. WHat really puzzles me is
that my 3 machines have the same RedHat 6.0 stuff, but one has all kinds
of problems with launching capplets and session management. Here are
some errors.
When I use the foot | Settings | desktop | window manager routine, this
is the error output:
Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkctree.c: line 3908 (gtk_ctree_post_recursive):
assertion `ctree != NULL' failed.
** CRITICAL **: file giop-msg-buffer.c: line 710
(giop_recv_buffer_unuse): assertion `buffer != NULL' failed.
** CRITICAL **: file giop-msg-buffer.c: line 457
(giop_send_buffer_unuse): assertion `send_buffer != NULL' failed.
** WARNING **: an initialization error occurred while starting
'wm-properties-capplet'.
aborting...
I say Settings | Save Session:
rm: cannot remove `/home/pauljohn/.gnome//gmc-92l93Z': No such file or
directory
Suppose I say Settings | Desktop | ThemeSelector:
Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from (NULL) pointer to `GtkCTree'
Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkctree.c: line 3908 (gtk_ctree_post_recursive):
assertion `ctree != NULL' failed.
** CRITICAL **: file giop-msg-buffer.c: line 710
(giop_recv_buffer_unuse): assertion `buffer != NULL' failed.
** CRITICAL **: file giop-msg-buffer.c: line 457
(giop_send_buffer_unuse): assertion `send_buffer != NULL' failed.
I can start gnome control center 1.06 from the Foot without any error
messages.
I keep thinking that this troublesome machine has some lingering file
from an old version of gnome or gtk, but I can't find it. I've done rpm
-qf on any gnome or gtk related file, and I find out they match what I
think I have. I have
glib-1.2.3-1.i386.rpm
gtk+-1.2.3-1.i386.rpm
control-center-1.0.6-1.i686.rpm
ORBit-devel-0.4.92-1.i386.rpm
gnome-libs-1.0.12-1.i386.rpm
gnome-core-1.0.9-1.i386.rpm
I think my RPMS may have some mix-and-match between the ones Dax Nelson
provided and the ones from the RHAD site. I think I will grab all the
ones from ftp.gurulabs.com and install them just to be sure that is not
the cause.
If you can help, I'd sure appreciate an explanation.
