Is there a "timeout" in ORBit?

I'm having trouble starting Control Center capplets, and I'm wondering
if this is a speed issue? (I'm running on an ancient Sparc 10...)

If I start:
	$ screensaver-properties-capplet

I get:
	** WARNING **: Unable reach the control-center.
	Exiting...

But the Control Center *does* start a couple of seconds later.
If I then try again with Control Center running:
	$ screensaver-properties-capplet
it works !(?)

What gives? Is this really a timing problem, or am I miles away?
