Well, around 10:30pm (BST) tonight it took four (maybe three?) attempts at
cvs -z3 update -Pd control-center to get rid of (taking an example line):

cvs update: move away
control-center/capplets/screensaver-properties/screensaver-desktops/coral.png;
it is in the way
C
control-center/capplets/screensaver-properties/screensaver-desktops/coral.png
cvs update: move away
control-center/capplets/screensaver-properties/screensaver-desktops/crystal.png;
it is in the way

and even now I'm stuck:

[jg@cyberstorm gnome]$ cvs -z3 update -Pd control-center
cvs server: Updating control-center
cvs server: Updating control-center/capplets
cvs server: Updating control-center/capplets/e-conf
cvs server: Updating control-center/capplets/gl
cvs server: Updating control-center/gl
[ nothing else coming down the line ]
