Hi Greg,
        Thanks very much mate. :-) I think you may be on to something
here. I'll give it a try in a few hours with Rasterman's Freetype
instead of Gnome's. I had forgotten that my previous installations were
a combination of the Enlightenment libraries from www.rasterman.com and
the general, base Gnome 1.x libraries from www.gnome.org. This could be
the very reason why my earlier installs worked and this one does not.

Thanks mate, I've been tearing my hair out over this one! ;-)
