It sounds like you may have more serious problems than what you're
attributing to Gnome...

I know in the Windows world, we got used to simply re-installing Windows
when we ran into "unsolvable" problems. I don't know if that's the case with
Linux/Unix/etc, but certainly a complete removal (including all config
files, .gnome* directories, etc) and re-install of all Gnome packages might
be in order would rule out blaming Gnome.
