looking at it again, it seems even more random.  Does gnome-session need
to be running for the screensaver settings to behave properly?  Changes do
not seem to take effect.  In fact what the screensaver config screen says,
and what it starts when you load the screensaver capplet seem to have no
connection whatsoever.
