Emacs and GNOME

This surely isn't the first time someone asks this question, but
anyways, now that GNOME 1.0 is out, perhaps it's somehow less
theoretical now...

What are the stakes for Gnomification of Emacs? Are there any plans? A
long time ago I heard RMS would really like to have it Gnomified at
some point - when will this point be?
