Why would there be namespace conflicts if the programs are named good.
For example. There will never be a conflict with
netscape.png

it will just exist... Whitch allows it to be shared as well...

The point you made was that office.desktop could be for koffice, for star
office, it could be for enything... But, they dont nessissarily have to be
in the same directory....
there could be 
/usr/share/apps/KOffice/office.desktop
/usr/share/apps/Star Office/office.desktop

then it is sorted into directorys

(it works for winblowz)

there is no real conflict. It is really up to program developers to make
sure they dont name a program the exact same thing. Making seperate files
for gnome, kde, whatever dont help the problem, they just make more work.
