If you already know a programming language, I would suggest any book
without "teach yourself ... in 21 days", "idiots guide to ..." or "... for
dummies".  I personally learned C using "Programming in ANSI C" by Stephen
G. Kochan, but I don't know if that is still available.  Also, probably
don't go for a book thicker than about 2 or 3 centimetres, or it will take
forever to learn :)
