Ok,
More info on the themes problem
Sep 29 17:29:56 NASA gdm[1038]: gdm_display_run: Server forked slave: 1039...
Sep 29 17:29:56 NASA gdm[1039]: gdm_slave_init: Xserver on pid 1040
Sep 29 17:30:01 NASA gdm[1042]: gdm_slave_usr1_handler: Starting greeter: 1042
Sep 29 17:30:03 NASA gdm[1039]: gdm_slave_usr1_handler: gdmgreeter returned 'Loading Theme /opt/gnome/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libpixmap.so'
Sep 29 17:30:03 NASA gdm[1039]: gdm_slave_usr1_handler: Unknown command from greeter: Loading Theme /opt/gnome/lib/gtk/themes/engines/libpixmap.so!
It looks like gdmgreeter doesn't handle themes.
BTW I looked at the code and saw no mention of background attributes. I
guess I will have to pull out some books and learn some C.
