problems connecting to port 5001

When starting gnome I get a lot of "Unable to connect to server port 5001"
errors. How can I correct them? and what is supposed to be running on
5001?

also, what is the prefered way of invoking gnome? I did as suggested on
the web page:
background-properties --init &
      keyboard-properties --init &
      mouse-properties --init &
      panel &

however, I get a lot of errors because {mouse,keyboard}-properties don't
support the --init option... so I gather there's a new prefered method?
