Please check that you do not have more than one libz lurking around on 
your system.  This seems to be a common problem.  If your locate
database is up-to-date, you can just use that.  Otherwise look in the
X11 library directory---this seems to be the most common location of
the offending library.

Sorry.  Can't help you there.  The autoconfig tools are a mysterious,
albeit truly miraculous set of tools.  One of these days, I will make
an effort to figure out how to use them effectively.  But not today.
