Help: Gnome Generated Network Traffic?

Hello,

I appologise if this is a FAQ or in the mail archives, but I searched
through both.

When panel starts up, it generates network traffic.  It also seems to do
this intermitently after start up.  (Is this due to CORBA?)  In any
case, is there a way to shut this off?  I use the demand feature of pppd,
so while I have panel running, pppd never disconnects.  I'm using Gnome
.30 compiled from source rpms.  TIA.
