background-properties hangs....

Hi folks,

I hope this is the right list...

Ok, I've been using Gnome for a couple weeks and really enjoy it.  I
just can't get the "background-properties" program to work on my
machine.  I've RTFM-ed, installed three times (removed and then
re-installed the rpms -- running RH5.1), and am out of ideas.

Heres a sample running it from the command-line (but it does the same 
from within .xinitrc):

  [edhill@photon ~]$ background-properties 
  Gdk-Message: 
  ** ERROR **: sigpipe caught

at this point, program appears hung and uses 99.9% of the processor, 
so i cntrl-C to kill it:

  Gdk-Message: 
  ** ERROR **: sigint caught
  [edhill@photon ~]$ 


any help appreciated...!
