I do a 'make maintainer-clean' in my script every time, before I do my 
autogen.sh 
(that is what my "Preparing tree for build..." line in my logs means 
:-).  This doesn't take care of that, I take it?  Darn.  I guess trying 
to automate this process is like chasing the Holy Grail :-)
