sigsegv caught with latest Debian packages

I installed the basic GNOME packages from ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/debian,
and I modified my .xinitrc based on what I saw in the installation
instructions. However, when I start X, gnome-session outputs the
following:

  Gdk-Message:
  ** ERROR **: sigsegv caught
  Message: Initializing CORBA for panel

  Gdk-Message:
  ** ERROR **: sigsegv caught
  connected to session manager
  Gdk-Message:

  Gdk-Message:

  Gdk-Message:

  Gdk-Message:

  Message: Initializing CORBA for panel

  Gdk-Message:
  ** ERROR **: sigsegv caught
  Gdk-Message:
  ** ERROR **: sigsegv caught
  connected to session manager

Here is how I am starting gnome-session:

  /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker &
  exec gnome-session >> gnome.log

gnome-session is running after I start X:

$ ps auwx | grep gnome
  bjepson 140 0.8 3.3 4352 2120 1 S 15:09 0:01 gnome-session
  bjepson 163 0.3 2.6 4556 1672 1 S 15:09 0:00 gnome-smproxy
  bjepson 171 0.0 0.5 852 352 p2 S 15:12 0:00 grep gnome
  $

I installed GNOME this morning on a fresh install of Debian 2.0. Here is
some semi-randomly selected package information:

  gdk-imlib1 1.8.1-0.1
  gnome-core 0.30-1
  gnome-desktop 0.28.1-1
  gnome-panel 0.30-1
  gnome-session 0.30-1
  imlib-base 1.8.1-0.1
  imlib1 1.8.1-0.1
  libgnome0 0.30-1
  libgtk1.1 1.1.2-1
  orbit 0.3.0-1
  liborbit0 0.3.0-1
  libc6 2.0.7t-1

Also:

  $ uname -a
  Linux oscorb 2.0.36 #2 Tue Nov 24 20:39:57 EST 1998 i586 unknown

I'm running Linux kernel 2.0.36 with SMP enabled, but GNOME exhibits the
same behavior with a non-SMP (2.0.33) kernel.

Please let me know if you need any further information.
